What is a legal subscription service (or pre-paid legal plan), and how does it work?

Instead of paying a lawyer by the hour, you pay a small membership fee with LegalShield and have access to a dedicated provider law firm in your state for the legal services membership you select but without a huge bill. Prices and coverage vary depending on the membership services you select.

Will the membership really cover my specific legal issue?

Business Plans from LegalShield cover any and all legal issues. Many day-to-day legal issues are covered by the standard plan benefits with no additional fees. If your specific legal need is a bit more exotic and requires additional lawyer support beyond the standard benefits, you can use your attorney to help you at 25% off their regular hourly rates. No matter the situation, you’re covered, at substantial savings.

If you still have questions about coverage, please review the Small Business coverage details page. If you prefer to speak to someone live, simply contact our customer support team to discuss your specific situation.

What is your cancellation policy?

LegalShield is a pre-paid monthly subscription service, and our members have the right to cancel at any time. Per our company policy, all cancellation requests must be provided in writing. The easiest way to cancel is by emailing us at [email protected] with your name, membership number, phone number, and your request to cancel the membership.

For annual memberships, you may cancel any time after your first 12 months. If you would like to speak to someone about options to maintain your membership, please call as soon as possible to keep any pre-trial hours or other benefits you may have accumulated at (844)-714-8494 between 7-7 CST Monday-Friday, and a member of our team would be happy to help.

Does the LegalShield membership cover pre-existing situations?

Most pre-existing situations can receive consultation and the 25% discount from the provider law firm’s standard hourly rate. There are exclusions and exceptions, but your provider law firm can provide advice and possibly more on most pre-existing situations. Current exclusions and exceptions include:

  • Any civil action, motor vehicle tickets or charges relating to an event that happened before starting your membership.
  • Any IRS inquiry, investigation, or notice received before the start of your membership.

How long after I join can I use the plan?

You can use your plan as soon as your membership application is reviewed and your account is set up. The review process takes 12-24 business hours (or less) from the moment you purchase your plan. Once accepted, you can connect with your provider law firm within eight business hours once your request is submitted.

If the basic plan benefits don’t cover my specific situation, how much will it cost me?

When you need legal help that does not fall under the standard benefits, you may be able to work with your provider law firm for 25% off their standard hourly rates. The total cost depends on factors such as the area of law, your geographic location and your lawyer’s hourly rate. What we can say for sure is that if you are a member and work with your provider law firm under the discounted rates, you could save as a LegalShield member over hiring a lawyer directly. Costs are subject to change depending on the legal matter and its circumstances.

Who are the lawyers I’ll work with?

While LegalShield does not employ the lawyers that provide the services to members, LegalShield has a network of dedicated independent law firms across the United States and Canada made up of seasoned lawyers with an average of 22 years experience. The law firms in our network provide legal protection to over 1.4 million LegalShield members any time they need it, even in covered emergency situations, 24/7, 365 days a year. You can view the names and background information about the provider law firms and many lawyer profiles in our Law Firm Finder.

How can you provide all these legal services for such a small fee?

If lawyers charge hundreds of dollars an hour, how can I receive hours and hours of legal services, document preparation and trial defense, plus insane retailer discounts, for such a small fee? We get this question a lot. The answer is actually pretty simple.

We have 1.4 million members. Most of them do not need legal help each month. As such, the fees we collect allow us to pay the law firms monthly to provide services to the members that do need it and still make a profit. Also, retailers want to partner with us to expose their services to our membership. You save. You get protected. The lawyers and LegalShield make a fair profit. The retailers get new customers. It’s a win win win win win all the way around. Few things in life are that good. LegalShield is.

Who is covered under the Business Plans?

It’s important to note that all of our business plans cover your business, not you personally. Each business plan allows you to designate a certain number of authorized spokespeople to work with our lawyers on behalf of your organization. Designated spokespeople must be employees, owners, partners or officers of your company. If you need personal legal help, check out our our personal plan.

There is more information about this specific question near the top of the Coverage & Pricing Page.

Can you draft contracts for me?

If you need a document or contract drafted, you have two options.

  1. Download a lawyer-drafted template for free on our app, fill it in and have your lawyer review it and provide feedback.
  2. Have your lawyer draft a document from scratch at 25% off their standard hourly fees. This option saves you hundreds or thousands of dollars as your pre- and post-drafting consultations are covered by your plan benefits and you save a significant amount of money on hourly fees.

How can I save money with a LegalShield membership?

The membership fee is significantly less than paying the standard hourly rate at a traditional law firm. Also, instead of ignoring a situation where you’ve been wronged, you can affordably and easily consult a lawyer.

Will I work with the same lawyer each time I need help?

You may not work with the same lawyers if you have legal issues in totally different areas of law. However, you will work with the same provider law firm for your covered legal needs.

What is LegalShield’s service area, and are there provider law firms in my area?

Each state and some parts of Canada each have their own dedicated law firm. Members are to contact their dedicated provider law firm for membership services.

Do I have to use the app to use my plan?

No. While we’ve spent a lot of time making the app a seamless user experience, you don’t have to use it to access your benefits. After you purchase a plan, you’ll get an email that will include a toll-free number you can call to take advantage of your member benefits, you can call the customer care number at the top of our website or log into your online portal.
